The Memory Project is a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create portraits for youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, violence, and extreme poverty. The purpose is for the portraits to help the children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well being, and to act as meaningful pieces of personal history in the future. For the art students, this is an opportunity to creatively practice kindness and global awareness.
The photographs of the children and teens are received from global charities operating residential homes, schools, and care centers in a number of different countries every year. The art students then create the portraits using whatever media they choose, and the Memory Project Foundation hand-delivers them to the kids. The Memory Project then makes a video of each delivery to share with all of the art students and teachers involved.
This year, the QMS Art 1 class received photos of children from the Ukraine who have either been removed from their parents for issues of abuse, neglect or abandonment and have been placed in group homes; or have suffered tragedy due to the armed conflict in the eastern part of the country. Some of these children have lost parents or family members to the fighting, while others have seen the violence first hand before being evacuated.
Art 1 students worked very hard on these portraits and did an amazing job! Of course, we had to send the original artworks to the Ukraine, and we expect to get our video at the end of April. For display purposes, we printed a copy of the original photograph and the artwork.
